29-year-old Police Officer Ella French was shot in the head and killed on August 7, 2021 at 9 p.m. in Chicago, Illinois. Officer Carlos Yanez was shot twice in the head during the shooting, but Officer Yanez is still alive.

Emonte Morgan, 21, was pulled over during a traffic stop for bad tags. Emonte was a back passenger. Emonte's brother Eric Morgan, 19, was the driver of the vehicle. Eric was on probation for a Wisconsin theft conviction at the time of the shooting.

Officers asked the driver Eric to step out of the car, Eric complied and then ran away on foot. An officer gave chase. 

Officer Ella and Officer Yanez struggled with Emonte by the vehicle. Prosecutors say, Emonte shot Officers Ella and Yanez during the struggle.

Officer Ella died after being rushed to the hospital. Another officer returned fire and struck Emonte in the stomach. Emonte and Eric were able to get away for the moment, but were arrested a few hours later.       

Officer Yanez was critically injured in the shooting and has spent several weeks in the hospital since the shooting.

Emonte was charged with one count of first degree murder, two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, and unlawful use of a weapon.
