The initial investigation revealed Israel was crossing the road near the intersection of Eastway Drive and E. Witnesses stated that the driver of the Acura had the green light for his direction of travel, and Israel, though in a marked crosswalk, did not have the right of way.

As Israel was crossing the roadway, he was struck by the Acura as he neared the center median. The victim was then thrown into the intersection as a result of the impact, sustaining life-threatening injuries. The driver remained on scene. Israel was found lying in the roadway with visible injuries due to the vehicle strike.

Medic responded and transported the victim to Atrium Health’ Carolina Main Center, where he was initially in critical condition. The driver was screened for impairment, and impairment is not a suspected factor in the collision for the pedestrian. There is no initial evidence of excessive speed contributing to the collision.
