A suspect is in custody after carjacking a grandfather while his grandson was in the car

A 69-year-old man waiting with his 1-year-old grandson outside a DMV office in Covina, CA was carjacked and punched in the face on November 12, 2019 allegedly by a suspect identified as Brian Hardy, 36.

The carjacking occurred at a parking lot at 1359 N. Grand Ave. around 9:30 a.m. The victim and his grandson were in a parked Nissan Versa waiting for the man’s daughter, who was inside the DMV office.

Brian is accused of opening the unlocked driver side door and ordered the grandfather out of the car. The suspect drove in reverse. The victim told the suspect to let him at least get his grandson out the car, but was punched in the face.

The victim and his grandson was able to escape. The suspect drove off with the Nissan Versa.

Police used a tracking device in a tablet left in the car and found the Versa parked in a driveway off Valley Center Avenue.

The suspect led police on a chase which ended with him crashing into another car.

Officers arrested Brian on suspicion of carjacking, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, and evading police. He is being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles in lieu of $100,000.

Brian is a sex offender who has also been convicted of weapons and drug offenses.

Brian was convicted of oral copulation with a minor and lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 in 2004.
