31-year-old Malikah Bennett was arrested on May 21, 2021 and charged with murdering her own daughter Mejelic Sandez, 4, on Braden Drive Charlotte, NC. Mejelic was found dead and buried under ground. This is not the first time Malikah has been charged with child abuse.
During the initial investigation, detectives received several tips and evidence that indicated foul play might have been involved. Homicide Unit Detectives were notified and began investigating this incident as a homicide investigation.
On May 21, 2021 Crime Scene Search responded to the residence on Braden Drive where they recovered human remains believed to be Mejelic.
Mejelic was found buried in the back yard of the home on Braden Drive. Mejelic's body was badly decomposed.
As part of continued investigation detectives interviewed several people that voluntarily came to the police headquarters throughout the day, including Malikah.
At the conclusion of the interview, Malikah was arrested and charged with felony child abuse, inflicting physical injury, felony concealing a death, and 1st degree murder.
The investigation and arrest of Malikah was a collaborative effort by detectives with the Homicide Unit, Missing Persons Unit, Crimes against Children Unit, and the Crime Scene Search unit.
MOTHER'S PAST ARREST
In March 2020 Malikah was arrested and charged with 3 counts of child abuse. In 2020 Tamara Brown, 30, was charged with murdering her 6-month-old son Chi-Liam Cody Brown-Erickson.
