22-year-old Derwin Lewis was arrested after being charged with DWI during a deadly bus collision. On October 21, 2021 a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on Mount Holly Road near I-485 in Charlotte, NC.
The collision involved a Charlotte Area Transit Systems bus. Derwin was driving a SUV, and a passenger was in his vehicle.
The SUV was traveling on Mount Holly Road and was attempting to make a left turn to enter the on-ramp for I-485. The C.A.T.S. Bus was traveling on Mount Holly Road when Derwin turned left in front of the bus and failed to yield the right of way, forcing the bus to collide with the S.U.V., according to crash scene detectives.

Derwin's passenger sustained life threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The victim's identity is unknown at the moment. Derwin sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The bus had heavy front end damage and the SUV had severe front end damage.
Passengers from the city bus also sustained minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to local area hospitals.
Speed does not seem to be a factor for either party. However, Derwin was screened for impairment and was arrested, charged with DWI. Derwin is also charged with felony death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.
