Blame it on the alcohol. The Press Box Bar and Grille is without ABC liquor license permits following repeated incidents of violence which included assaults on law enforcement. The Press Box is located at 9609 Tryon Street Suite A Charlotte, NC. It is popular among young urban people, club goers, and others. The Press Box lost their liquor license on April 16, 2021.

Shootings have erupted at The Press Box and officers have been punched in the mouth and sustained broken noses due to drunk patrons at the popular night spot.

Since March 26, 2021, officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have responded to The Press Box Bar and Grille for two calls of shots fired and other incidents where patrons were injured.

Most recently, in April 2021 a man was shot in the stomach at the Press Box, police officers were obstructed by the crowd and even an employee from The Press Box, officials say.

Reports obtained from the officers described the bar crowd as “intoxicated” and “uncooperative”. One female cop was punched in the face by a member of the rowdy crowd. Security guards at The Press Box showed no regard for the crime scene or the safety of police officers, according to official documents. Arthur Rhyne, 41, was arrested and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.

Another alleged drunk patron of The Press Box tried to get in the back of an ambulance on scene, affidavits say. That same patron then head butted a officer in the nose, which caused the officer to sustain profuse bleeding, swelling, and a fractured nose.

North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) was contacted regarding the incidents of violence and conducted an investigation. As a result, on Friday, April 16, 2021, special agents served The Press Box Bar and Grille with documentation which summarily suspended the business’ ABC permits and liquor license.

Omar Qureshi is an ALE Special Agent in Charge and says:

“The Alcohol Law Enforcement Division will not tolerate any pattern of violence or lack of responsible supervision by any ABC permittee which jeopardizes the safety of patrons”

The Press Box has held ABC permits since April 2014.

In an affidavit a CMPD officer wrote the following:

“I personally believe The Press Box Bar & Grill to be one of the worst nighttime bar establishments that leads to crime. The parking lot is constantly full of intoxicated subjects in large crowds, which often lead to physical violence either through assaults or gun violence as seen above, or intoxicated subjects operating motor vehicles."
