A murder at an Aldi grocery store left a 79-year-old woman dead

On October 14, 2019 Nahorna Vira Hryhorinva, 79, was killed in the parking lot of an Aldi grocery store in Mathews, NC.

Sawan Alshabani, 54, ran over Nahorna in the parking lot.

On October 21, 2019 Sawan was charged with first degree murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Officials say Sawan was driving a vehicle and intentionally hit and killed Nahorna in the parking lot of the Aldi located on 555 West John Street and then tried to run over four more people. Sawan then drove away from the scene, but eventually came back to speak with officers.

Nahorna was hit near the front door of the Aldi grocery store. Nahorna was found badly injured in the parking lot, she was rushed to Carolina Medical Center Main where she later died.

Charges were eventually brought against Sawan due to witness statements, the speed of the vehicle she was driving, and video footage.

The encounter was random and isolated, there are no known connections between Sawan and Nahorna. No motives have been mentioned yet.
