The first rule of Navajo tacos is: You do not joke about Navajo tacos.

A post at a Facebook page innocently titled The Navajo Independent has raised hackles in an episode that would make a good entry at Literally Unbelievable.

Here’s what the Navajo Independent posted 15 hours ago. The brief story has been shared over 3,100 times and drawn more than 2,600 comments, many quite passionate.

The Navajo Taco Ban is in full effect

WINDOW ROCK, ARIZ. — In an unprecedented move, leaders of the Navajo Nation’s three branches of government signed an agreement on Wednesday banning the world “Navajo Taco”on all concession food stands throughout the Navajo Nation to improve relationships between other tribes, other names are allowed such as the popular word “NDN taco” or “Indian Taco.”

“It’s historic,” said Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye. “By doing this, we’re saying that (the tribes) are coming together, that we’re going to pursue these objectives and goals together,” Begaye said. “We can move the Nation forward by demonstrating that the Navajo Nation government can work together. This is just the beginning.”

The Navajo Independent is a satire page, self-described as “Navajo Comedy (all news stories are fiction)… Kick back and have a few laughs. Its all good people.”

But it seems few, if any, have bothered to read that fine print. Here are some samples of outrage (authors shall remain anonymous):

Let’s all make a big deal about Navajo Tacos … Get your priorities straight NN Prez!

This just goes to show that we all elected an idiot as our Navajo Nation President

I’m white with a deep love for the Navajo. I love the Navajo taco and see nothing wrong with calling it that. This country’s going to hell in a handbasket.

There are more important issues, how dumb is the new Navajo Nation president

Obama for Navajo President!

This is the the new Navajo Nation presidents first agenda. Ban the word Navajo. Stupid. I completely disagree with the Navajo Nation doing this. Its absurd

Indeed, it’s absurd. Someday many of the angry parties will look back on this and laugh. But for now, the “Navajo taco ban” story continues to spread like wildfire on Facebook, and nobody’s laughing more than the Navajo Independent.

Incidentally, this was the Navajo Independent’s first post in over a year. Talk about making a comeback.
