Family fun and a free Alabama concert at the 67th Annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival and Pow Wow - List of additional pow wows below
The 67th Annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival & Pow Wow is being held this weekend, August 31-September 4, 2017 on the grounds of the architecturally and historically significant capitol of the Choctaw Nation, Tvshka Homma.
The Choctaw Nation Pow Wow continues to welcome hundreds of dancers to compete in a variety of native dance competitions. Traditional drumming and Gourd dancing are integral to the celebration.
The Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival presents opportunities for the family to learn about Choctaw traditions and tribal customs. Choctaw dancing, stickball games, storytelling, silversmithing and demonstrations of historic weaponry are highlighted. The Choctaw Nation Museum contains many interactive exhibits about Choctaw culture and historical artifacts including objects carried across the Trail of Tears.
The festival features a series of free concerts, including Grammy award-winning country music band Alabama on Saturday, September 2nd at the Tvshka Homma amphitheater. The free concerts are popular, so visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring lawn chairs.
Other events include a 5K run and walk, horseshoe tournaments, gospel singing, mechanical bull rides, and Inca flute players. Activities for children include pony rides, pottery-making, and a traditional corn game.
“The Nation’s festival is a tradition,” former Choctaw Chief Greg Pyle said in a press release last year. “Some of the people have been coming since they were kids. We try to give everyone a chance to enjoy what they like best whether it’s the concerts, the culture, the sports or just the great food. We are grateful for all the hard work it takes to prepare and hold an event of this magnitude. It’s as much fun for us, though, as it is for all of our thousands of visitors.”
Choctaw Nation tribal leaders agreed that it is important to include cost-free activities at the festival such as the concerts and carnival rides because many are not able to afford the overall expense. The sports tournaments are also free to enter and this has increased participation and ensured that the Nation’s sports complex continues to be a hub of activity.
“Giving is in the heart of the Choctaw,” former Chief Pyle said. “The Choctaw Nation welcomes the opportunity to bring everyone together.”
Chief Gary Batton encourages all Choctaw families to gather together and celebrate their heritage while creating new memories.
