The Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake annual Echoes of A Proud Mohawk Nation Pow Wow this weekend - List of additional pow wows below.
The Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake, Quebec, is holding its annual Echoes Of A Proud Nation Pow Wow this weekend on July 8th and 9th. The Mohawks of Kahnawá:ke (Kahnawákeró:non) are one of eight territories that comprise the Mohawk (Kanien:keha’ka, People of the Flint) Nation. It is the 27th year for the Mohawk Nation Pow Wow.
This Mohawk Nation Pow Wow held in Kahnawake represents the Mohawk people, who are members of the Haudenosaunee, or People of the Longhouse along with historic, political and cultural ties the Oneida, Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga and Tuscarora Nations.
The Haudenosaunee are also known as the Six Nation Iroquois Confederacy. They are are a constitutional democracy governed by an ancient constitution known as the Kaianere’kó:wa, the Great Law of Peace, that has existed since well before the settler colonialist occupation of Turtle Island.
In their essay What Is A Pow Wow?, the Kahnawákeró:non explain that “Pow wow time is Native people meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and making new ones. This is a time to renew thoughts of the old ways and to preserve a rich heritage.”
Established in 1991, the Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow Wow is a Kahnawákeró:non spiritual celebration of life through drumming, song and dance, through which people come together to renew old friendships and make new ones. The theme for the Mohawk Nation pow wow is “Renewing our spirits through the power of the drum”.
