Adam Sandler Netflix contract renewed in the wake of ‘Ridiculous Six’ and ‘Pixels’

According to the latest from Deadline Hollywood, there is a four-movie extension of the Adam Sandler Netflix contract through his company Happy Madison Productions. The Adam Sandler Netflix contract was renewed in the wake of his racially-insensitive western comedy movie, The Ridiculous Six and the feature film Pixels.

The contrast of the two films by Sandler is an interesting one, while Pixels struggled in the theaters, The Ridiculous Six fared very well on Netflix, thus paving the way for a new deal.

According to Deadline, the Adam Sandler Netflix deal will see Sandler to be mostly dedicating his efforts to Netflix and online streaming movies, that will be seen solely by the millions of Netflix subscribers in 190 countries. Netflix is financing the development and production of the films for Happy Madison Productions and Sandler has full creative control.

In April of 2015, approximately one dozen Native actors and actresses, as well as the Native cultural advisor, left the set of the Adam Sandler Netflix production, The Ridiculous Six. The actors, who were primarily from the Navajo nation, left the set after the satirical western’s script repeatedly insulted native women and elders and grossly misrepresented Apache culture.

One of the actors that walked off the set was Loren Anthony. He told ICMN that he is wary of an Adam Sandler Netflix agreement, but says he will do his best to maintain a wait-and-see approach.

“Adam flunked culture sensitivity and appropriation class two years ago,” said Anthony. “Maybe he learned his lesson. Maybe this time he’ll get it right and we can all laugh with him.”

Both Netflix executives and Sandler gave comments to Deadline.

Ted Sarandos, the Netflix Chief Content Officer told Deadline that Adam Sandler is “one of the leading comedians in the film world,” and that his movies have proven to be extremely successful with Netflix subscribers.

“We are thrilled at the opportunity to extend our partnership with Adam and his entire team at Happy Madison and keep the world laughing,” Sarandos told Deadline.

Sandler told Deadline that he loves working and collaborating with Netflix. “I love how passionate they are about making movies and getting them out there for the whole world to see. They’ve made me feel like family and I can’t thank them enough for their support.”
