Across Turtle Island: A moment for Pride

This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising

Six days of protests and clashes with the New York City police outside the Stonewall Inn in 1969 led to what we now know as Pride Month. The Stonewall Riots, or as many call the Stonewall Uprising, led the way for a national Two Spirit, LGBTQ+ movement.

This year the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising with festivals, dance parties, carnivals, and more. June is also when Indian Country celebrates the Two-Spirit community.

A little known fact: Suquamish Tribe was the first tribe to approve same-sex marriage in 2011. It wasn’t legalized in Washington state -- or in the country at that time. Tribal citizen Heather Purser asked her tribal council for the approval. There was no resistance.

MOUNTAIN TIME

Navajo Nation / Diné Bikéyah

Diné citizens still find a way to celebrate the Two-Spirit despite the Diné Marriage Act, ban of same-sex marriage since 2005. Former Navajo Nation Joe Shirley, Jr. signed the act into law. Diné Pride planned a list of events throughout the month around the Four Corners area (they already kicked off the month with a carnival in Farmington, New Mexico). They even have some support from Rep. Sharice Davids, D-Kansas, in a short video.

Show your Diné Pride on Facebook: They also have three fun Facebook profile frames. Check out the Diné Pride 2019 Facebook page for it or search for “NNPride 2019 Trans Community,” “2019 NNPride,” or “NNPride Seal 2019.”
