The controversy began on Tuesday on the Today show, when Megyn Kelly suggested wearing blackface “was OK” to wear on Halloween when she was a kid. She later apologized for the incident including a video post on Twitter.
As reported by Newsweek, “hundreds of thousands of people condemned the former Fox News host for saying wearing blackface at any time for any reason was appropriate. Many of the hosts on NBC’s morning news program seemed to agree with the masses and similarly slammed Kelly on the Today Show on Wednesday morning.”
Many critics of the episode cite that there were no people of color amongst the hosts.
Al Roker told Newsweek, “The fact is, while she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color round the country … This is a history going back to the 1830s minstrel shows to demean and denigrate a race. It wasn’t right. I’m old enough to know [and] have lived through Amos ‘n’ Andy, where you had white people in blackface playing two black characters, just magnifying the worst stereotypes about black men—and that’s what the problem is. That’s what the issue is,” said Roker.
Others have criticized the show in general on social media.
Today on Twitter thousands have made a parody of the incident, calling for Megyn Kelly to resign or be fired with the early morning trending hashtag #MegynKellyCanceledParty.
