Comedian Kevin Hart — who faced recent scrutiny on social media for the posting of Cowboy and Indian party photos — has stepped down as the invited host of the Oscars after homophobic tweets were called out on social media on Thursday.
The tweets were reportedly from the years prior to 2011. One of the most referenced tweets appears to be when he said he did not want his son to be gay. CNN reported about the tweet, which has since been deleted, which stated: "Yo if my son comes home & try's 2 play with my daughters doll house I'm going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice 'stop that's gay'."
Hart has said the tweets had tapped into his “days of old” and that he had moved on to a “completely different space in his life.”
Senior Film Reporter for Buzz Feed News Adam B. Vary conducted a tweet search for questionable tweets, and wrote the number of incidents was “a lot.”
Since first being asked to host the Academy Awards, a show that has suffered declining viewership over the past several years, Hart at first said it was the opportunity of a lifetime, but now he has posted to Instagram that he would be stepping down. He also apologized to the LGBTQ community.
In a tweet, Hart wrote, “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's....this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”
He posted the video to Instagram which says: “I know who I am & so do the people closest to me.”
As Indian Country Today previously reported, Kevin Hart and his wife Eniko recently came under fire for posting their one-year-old son’s Cowboy and Indians-themed birthday party photos on Instagram, to which Hart responded on his Sirius XM radio show Straight From the Hart about the incident.
Hart summed up his comments stating, ‘This isn't a racial slur that people are doing and being malicious with. This is a game.’
