Outrage as non-Native youth wearing #MAGA hats taunt and disrespect Native elder

Nathan Phillips, Omaha, is a Vietnam-era Veteran who hosts a sacred pipe ceremony at Arlington, was taunted in D.C.

Native Twitter has gone ablaze as a Native American elder singing the AIM Song in Washington DC during the Indigenous Peoples March was ridiculed, taunted and mocked by a group of non-Native youth.

The video, which was posted by YouTube account holder KC NOLAND, was also screen captured and shared on other social media accounts with views shortly gaining tens of thousands of views.

The elder is Nathan Phillips, an Omaha elder who is also a Vietnam-era Veteran and former director of the Native Youth Alliance. He is also a keeper of a sacred pipe and holds an annual ceremony honoring Native American veterans in the Arlington National Cemetery.

Phillips is also the subject of a previous racially-based incident when he was taunted and harassed by Eastern Michigan University students who were dressed stereo-typically as Native Americans. As reported in FOX 2 News, he was yelled at and hit by a thrown beer can.

In a previous interview with Phillips, he told Indian Country Today that the Vietnam era was not easy as a marine. “People called me a baby killer and a hippie girl spit on me.”

Indian Country Today does not have further details, but will report as more details emerge.

I have to first say that although I did not vote for Trump, I do support a lot of the things he is doing and do not agree with others. I was adopted into a native family. I respect all cultures that call for peace and understanding that we are all created by one being. The actions of these students is reprehensible. For the adults to condone this, shame on them. I was raised that all people are God's creation and to NEVER place myself above another. The responses on twitter grouping ALL "MAGA" as racist and filthy is just as wrong as saying all liberals are insane. This is what is dividing this great country. Respect for culture, love for our fellow man, and the willingness to find compromise is sorely missing from our world. We are made to be different but to claim one above another is what will destroy us in the end. Reach out, shake your neighbor's hand and start a conversation. And please, leave hatred out of your hearts. May the Creator bless and keep you.

Just goes to show how entitled they feel and sad to say the reflection of their upbringing 🤦🏽‍♀️ smh so it’s not just blatant disrespect on the elder, but on his parents and grandparents as well

These look like school age children. Why were there no elders with them to teach them respect? Did they just show up on their own? I don't really know exactly what is going on there.

This young man makes me very upset. This is an elder (one whom is looked up to by living honorably.) and you never treat an elder as this ignorant kid just did. Shame on you and the others who laughed, did tomahawk chop, and sang the stereotype song. Let’s make this viral. These social media posts can follow someone to family, jobs, and more.
Also let’s flood letters to the school. Anyone that took part in this should be required to do something to pay the elder back via doing something to show respect to him. Mail letters Bob Rowe, Principal Catholic High school, 1600 Dixie HWY, Park Hills, KY 41011

No wonder these young people are ignorant. Their ancestors sold-out their cultural heritage(s) in the name of capitalism and manifest destiny. That does NOT excuse their disrespectful behaviour, though.

Awesome! There is no way that this kid was not influenced by Nathan! Even the others! Did you see how they all settled down as they were grabbed by the spirit!

Fake News, this was outside the Lincoln Memorial during the March For Life, against child murder via abortion. Sad that the kids were disrespectful towards the mentally disturbed Native American, though this Native American March is still a lie.

Outrageous Trump Hitler youth-like fascists. I get why Trump favors Andrew Jackson while he's historically illiterate stating Jackson would have stopped the Civil War. Jackson, the author of the Trail of Tears (the greatest death toll outside of wars on our continent that exceeded 9-11 and Pearl Harbor combined and defied Supreme Court ruling) ordered the burning alive of Native American women and children in Mississippi. This created the animosity between Jackson and Davy Crockett.

His name is Michael Hodge and he lives in Villa Hills, Kentucky. The school is the typical white flight private school in a suburban community. It’s an all male, nearly totally white school. Scrolling through their website and twitter account I saw one African-American coach, three distinct African-American students, and two students who may be other than white. The school posts very limited demographic data and of course, none of it is on racial diversity. These are sheltered, entitled children of parents who fear anything other than what is similar to themselves. To assuage their guilt, they sprinkle in a few token non-white students. Schools like Covington Catholic are a microcosm of everything that is wrong with America.

The elder was singing to him directly, there was obvious eye contact, and the kid stayed calm throughout, not changing his expression. I wonder what effect this will have on him. I'm betting that it will have an effect - that was strong medicine being given.

Wicksell

Was that kid born in America? Doesn't that make him, by definition... a Native? I mean I don't care who said what to who, or why... that's just some fake ass shit set in motion to keep us distracted, divided and indecisive... I just want to know... who are the Natives? We all, since the beginning of man's trek across the plains, through the tundra, over the straights and down the Andes have migrated... and conquered, enslaved, raped and murdered to get the lands we hold... But hey, I'm just a Hawaiian, who's land was stripped by blacks, whites, mexicans and indians, during Americas Colonialism days.

I didn't see harassment and "mocking." I see young people laughing and dancing and actually learning from what they were experiencing. I am over a quarter Ojibwe and Cree Indian and I am a supporter of the President. It pains me to see Native people many of whom have no strong involvement in politics one way or another being used by liberal groups as pawns. It's offensive to see these activists take up Indian issues or PC issues as they think they relate to Indians and become offended on behalf of Indians who may not even be offended. I never saw naming sports teams after Native Americans as a bad thing. It was White people who started that.

Wicksell
Wicksell

I guess I saw a different video than the rest of you racist fucks. What I saw was an uppity man getting in the face of a kid that won't tow the line and join in his fake ass religious ceremony. All religions are shit and there are no boogy-woogies that control our lives. But I love the hypocrisy of you so called "enlightened" people. Yeah, call the school and post the kids name and call him a NAZI... I guess that's what this old man would want you to do. As a VET, a Hawaiian and an American I can tell you now, ya'll racist... every single one of you, are fucking disgusting.

Indian Country Today should immediately remove this fake news crap-fest from their site. If you watch the video, you can see that the kid in the top photo never says a word or makes a sound. Some guy with a drum walked up to that kid and started chanting in his face. So the kid looks back at him with a funny expression, and that's all there is to it. But now the shame engine of political correctness kicks into high gear. Read the comments!

What sucks is that we as a Society are now giving Adults under the age of 21 a pass because we have determined their brains have not fully formed to understand the repercussions of their actions.

ohwhynot
ohwhynot

Not really, the consequences of their actions may be different than those given an adult. I think having to learn about Native American history and to personally apologize to a meeting of Native American veterans would be more effective than being dragged off by police. The school that didn't adequately educate and supervise their students should also be penalized and engage in some restorative justice.

Siuanna
Siuanna

Indian Country Today, please call the school and ask for an explanation. It is one thing to laugh and clap along, ignorant of what they are witnessing. It is quite another to start the tomahawk chop with the football stadium chant. Mr. Phillips does this every year, these guys just found something to play with and demean. The staring contest of the kid with the #maga hat is very territorial. He's not just standing there, he moves with the drummer, sending a message that the ground is his and doesn't belong to all of us.

Tejas Rob
Tejas Rob

Well, I'm sure I'll be attacked for this because the outrage machine has already chosen sides, but in my opinion both sides here were wrong.

Mr. Phillips broke away from the march and approached these kids, he was wrong to do that but these kids were still very disrespectful.

In my opinion Mr Phillips was also wrong in his interview when he said "we didn't have walls", which is generally true but the tribes did have their own territory and other tribes were to respect that territory and not come onto it without permission. So we did have borders which we expected others to respect. You could pay a heavy price if you did not.

So Mr. Phillips should know this and understand why people expect their borders and territory to be respected. He should also know sometimes this territory was took by force by one tribe from another. None of us in all humankind are innocent when it comes to that.

But these kids should be taught that sometimes tribes shared land and allowed other tribes to pass when it involved feeding themselves or escaping to a safer place.

So while I think Mr Phillips is a good man and was trying to do something good, he went about it in the wrong way and instead forced a confrontation. He should have asked the people who were in charge of these kids if he could speak to them and try to have a conversation. I think he missed a chance to teach the younger generation or at least have them hear a respectful but different point of view.

And to be clear, I do not excuse what these young men did. I hope there can still be a learning moment for them from this.

StacyeK
StacyeK

I watched the vid. I can tell those kids are not culturally aware of the native practices. Judging by their response it all looks rather silly. The problem is how they responsed to what they are seeing and hearing. Some join in singing, some dance too but because of their ignorance about whats happening their response is without a doubt very inappropriate and disrespectful. The real problem is not those students but the inherent discriminatory attitudes and prejudices toward native Americans that have been handed down from previous generations. Its shameful behaviour to say the least but the shame is shared with their parents, families, school teachers, communities, the Cathlolic Religion and last but not least, the United States of America. #tolerance #acceptance #goodwilltoallpeople #education #basicvalues

The FAULT is upon the Event organizers (Chase Iron Eyes), event officials, Public Safety and/or possibly security. Where were the much celebrated "water protectors" especially when Chase Iron Eyes was conjuring up the "Spirit of Standing Rock"? Standing Rock was not peaceful picnic at the fault AGAIN of the Main Organizer to Standing Rock -Barack Obama Administration. Standing Rock should never have happened but due to inaction, it was created and grew legs to where another POTUS had to shut it down and move onward.

No disrespect seen by the kids. The elder activist confronted THEM, while they were minding their own business, broke away from the march. They said and did nothing racist or demeaning, just danced and tried to chant along, or stood silently in their discomfort and tried to have a good time in spite of not knowing just how to react to a grown man approaching them whose culture they were not part of. Bullying and hating on these kids by the leftist agenda divisive SJWs at ICTMN is the abuse here. And I am native.

WARNING to all Americans; WAKE-UP CALL! ... they call this fascist sect of Christianity "Dominionism" - their ideology & plan for NWO is called the "Seven Mountain Mandate " ...look it up -- aka - "7-M Mandate" ... basically White Supremacy in the "Name of God" - [what else is new on this messed up 'White Imperialism' misguided planet ?] .... They (Christian Evangelical Dominionists) plan on taking over our government ... Vice President Mike Pence is a Dominionist [their latest 'Religious Freedom' anti-lynching law' wants to exclude LBGTQ community] ... Really nice humans - the kind you want for neighbors.... PLEASE spread the 'word' - I fear for all of us! They base their beliefs off teachings of [now deceased] J.R. Rushdooney [sexist, racist, classist, believes in slavery, it's o.k. to lynch LBGTQ] ... basically everything evil about humans they teach in Kentucky where one of these elder Christian Dominionist spent millions taxpayer money to build a life sized "Noah's Ark" ... (can't make this up) ... these people are insane & a danger to all our freedom [PLEASE: learn about their "7-M Mandate" -- very scary; they call Evangelical Dominionists the "Christian Taliban"

mjschilder

this mentality came from the teachings of J.R. Rushdooney; White Males shall hold Dominion over all the Earth ... They intend to turn the United States & all other countries under the rule of a Christian Theocracy - "One Nation, One World, Under God" (these are very bad men; sexist, racist, believe in the Book of Genesis (literally) -e.g., "God made woman from Adam's rib to serve him" -slavery is accepted, & LBGTQ are sinful. Noah's Ark is in Williamstown, Kentucky - planned to be the epicenter in the USA for this Christian New World Order [they used public tax dollars to build] ...

The elder demanded that boys attention, and the boy stood there and willingly gave it. The elder made him a part of it and the boy accepted by respectfully giving his attention to the elder. My sons who are half native would have done the exact same thing. Honestly to me it looks like the kids were enjoying it and the elder made them a part of it. I guess people want to find something to be offended about. There is nothing wrong with making america great again either. His hat is just a hat.
