Peggy Flanagan to be sworn-in as lieutenant governor on Monday

Follow Indian Country Today for live coverage of the ceremony.

Indian Country and the state of Minnesota, or the ancestral homelands to the Anishinabewaki and Očeti Šakówiŋ, will see the first Native American woman sworn in as the lieutenant governor.

This is also monumental because Peggy Flanagan, White Earth Nation, will be the “highest-ranking Native woman elected to executive office in the history of the United States.”

The swearing-in ceremony for Flanagan and other Minnesota Constitutional Officers takes place on Jan. 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul.
