One Country Project
Former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp, Founding Board Member of the One Country Project, issued the following statement after the October jobs report. The report showed employment growth slowed from September, with 128,000 jobs created last month, and the unemployment rate increasing by 0.1 percent. These numbers include an increase of 88,000 part-time jobs due to the inability to find full-time employment. This jobs report confirms the manufacturing downturn, which is now the smallest share of the economy in 72 years.
“President Trump pledged to ‘restore American manufacturing,’ but his tariffs on aluminum and steel, trade wars, and failed leadership have made that a broken promise. The American economy lost 36,000 manufacturing jobs in the last month. If that’s what the president considers a restoration, someone needs to buy him a dictionary.
“Coming on the heels of lackluster Gross Domestic Product growth in the third quarter, most of which was inflated by the president’s billions of dollars in government spending, the most recent jobs report further proves the president cannot tweet his way out of the Trump slump. With trade policies that hurt American businesses and consumers, erratic behavior that undermines business investment, and a total lack of leadership when it comes to growing sectors he promised to save, the president has again demonstrated his deficiencies in leading the American people.”
