State of New Mexico Indian Affairs Department

The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) congratulates Mr. Darrell Paiz on his election as President of the Jicarilla Apache Nation. President Paiz previously worked at the Jicarilla Apache Tax and Revenue Department for 33 years. In 2018, Mr. Paiz ended his tenure as director when he was elected as a Legislative Council member for the Jicarilla Apache Nation. President Paiz attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

“I am thankful to the Jicarilla Apache Nation members for their confidence in me to serve as their President,” said President Derrell Paiz, “I look forward to continuing the government-to-government relationship with the state and federal government and working side-by-side with other tribal nations in our shared goal of tribal self-determination and tribal sovereignty.”   

“The Indian Affairs department congratulates President Darrell Paiz on his inauguration today. Mr. Paiz has demonstrated a strong commitment to his community and to the tribes of New Mexico for years and we look forward to working him,” said Secretary Trujillo. 

President Paiz will fulfill the remaining term of the office held by Mr. Levi Pesata. Deputy Secretary Nadine Padilla of the Indian Affairs department attended the inauguration in Dulce on Friday. President Paiz will begin his duties immediately.
