Bismarck, North Dakota - The United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) invites the general public to their 49thAnnual UTTC International Powwow in Bismarck, North Dakota on September 7-9, 2018. The weekend event will be held at the historic UTTC campus. Attendees can watch individuals compete in singing and dancing contests, join in on great sporting events, enjoy delicious traditional & modern Native American food, and so much more.

The UTTC Powwow has grown in leaps and bounds since its beginnings in 1969 and it is now the largest Native meeting of its kind in the Bismarck-Mandan area. Nearly 20,000 attendees are expected at this years biggest (and best) gathering yet.

All are welcome to enjoy the entertainments of this top-tier Powwow in the northern Great Plains circuit. Dancers come from over state lines and even the Canadian border to compete, which has earned the UTTC Powwow the title of the Home of the Champions; the UTTC LEGENDS softball tournament feels more like the McQuadescompetition each year: 64 teams duked it out in 2017 to be crowned number one; Native artisans will be selling thousands of authentic and hand-made goods; and buffets will be serving free food like Indian tacos and Buffalo buffets to attendees during the afternoons.

Special ceremonies will also be a part of the weekend activities, as a reminder to the importance of community. The Veterans Special at this years Powwow will continue the tradition set from last years WWI Veteran Honoring, says Leander R. McDonald, PhD, Dakota/Arikara, President of UTTC. We will be recognizing all servicemen and women. Alongside the Veterans Special, two more Specials will be held in honor of Native individuals. The Mens Grass Special will honor Troy Shepherd, Jr. And Smiley Shepherd, Sr. will be honored at the Mens Fancy Special.

We are very pleased to welcome visitors from across Indian Country and beyond to our campus to join in this celebration of life, food, and culture, President McDonald said. The UTTC International Powwow is an event that brings together a wide-reaching American Indian community for a weekend of festivities and camaraderie. And it offers an opportunity for those unaccustomed with Native culture and heritage to experience it firsthand and have a lot of fun doing so!
