Charlotte Interstate Crash Scene Caused Second Accident Feet Away

A multi-vehicle chain reaction crash causes major traffic headache on a South Charlotte Highway

On Friday November 1, 2019 at 9:59 p.m., multiple agencies were called to a motor vehicle accident with reported overturn on a major Charlotte highway. The accident happened on I-485 Inner South of Exit 65 (South Blvd). Charlotte Fire Department Ladder 24 arrived on scene and confirmed a two vehicle accident with one vehicle on its side. Both vehicles were ended up on the other side of the guardrail.

Charlotte Fire requested the call be upgraded to a "physical rescue/pin-in." The "pin-in brought additional resources from Charlotte Fire Department as well as Pineville Fire Department. Fire officials confirmed three people were trapped in the overturn vehicle. During the rescue operation, Charlotte firefighters reported a second multi-vehicle crash just feet from the first one. No one was injured in the second crash. Pineville & Charlotte Firefighters worked together in tandem and began extricating victims from the overturn vehicle. Due to the position of the vehicle, firefighter had to remove the roof in order gain access to the injured victims.

Due to the multiple injuries from the first accident paramedics with Mecklenburg EMS (MEDIC) sent multiple ambulances to the scene. MEDIC confirms three people were transported to Charlotte hospitals. One victim was taken to Atrium CMC Trauma Center and 2 additional victims were transported to CMC Pineville. Traffic on the inner loop of I-485 was backed up for approximately 3 miles for about 2 hours while emergency crews remained on scene.
