An unidentified driver was killed instantly after crashing into a tree in Southwest Charlotte Sunday Night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that killed one driver instantly Sunday night. The 911 call at 8:12 p.m. reported the single vehicle had impacted a tree at the intersection of Moss Road and Erwin Road. Firefighters from Charlotte Fire Department, and Mecklenburg EMS Agency (MEDIC) responded within minutes.

The crash happened on a normally heavily traveled road near the Carowinds Amusement Park. When Firefighters arrived, they confirmed a white sedan had impacted a tree and was badly mangled. Firefighters reported "heavy intrusion" on the driver side of the vehicle when they examined the scene.

Paramedics pronounced the unidentified driver deceased at the scene. The front of a white sedan could be seen facing into the ground while the rear of the vehicle was up in the air.

Erwin Road between South Tryon Street and Steele Creek Road was shutdown while Major Crash Detectives spent most of the night investigating the crash.
