Grammy-Winning Songwriter Killed in York South Carolina Crash

LaShawn Daniels, 41, was killed in a double fatal crash Tuesday evening in York County, South Carolina.

On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, a two-car crash claimed the lives of two people in Catawba, South Carolina. The crash was reported shortly after 5:00 p.m. on SC-5 (Highway 5) just south of Cureton Ferry Road. South Carolina State Highway Patrol Troopers said the Ford pickup truck was traveling west on Highway 5 when it crossed the center line and hit the Ford van and a Jeep SUV that were traveling east on Highway 5. The York County Coroner's Office confirmed that Lashawn Daniels, of Waxhaw, North Carolina, died when his van collided with a pickup truck driven by Jackie Moss Jr., of Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

The driver of the SUV was airlifted to a hospital, and a passenger was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The van Daniels was driving was barley recognizable after the van burst into flames following the accident.

Lashawn Daniels was well known for penning songs for artists such as Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez and Michael Jackson according to Daniels' publicist JoJo Pada. Daniels' wife, April, expressed her sadness in a statement after her husband's sudden passing - "It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, family member and friend, Lashawn Daniels who was the victim of a fatal car accident in South Carolina, a Grammy-award winning producer and songwriter, Daniels was a man of extraordinary faith and a pillar in our family.”

Daniels was a native of New Jersey known by many as "Big Shiz." He is known for writing songs such as "You Rock My World” by Michael Jackson, “It’s Not Right (But It’s Okay)” by Whitney Houston, and “Telephone” by Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga. Recently he wrote a song by the now-iconic Monica and Brandy duet, “The Boy Is Mine.”
