On Monday, November 11, 2019, at 12:25 p.m., Centereach Fire Department was called to a smelly mess at Middle Country Road and Dietz Avenue in Lake Grove, New York.

A garbage truck under contract with Town of Brookhaven caught caught fire and created a mess within the trash truck. Lake Grove Village Fire Marshal was first to arrive on scene and confirm a trash hauler was indeed on fire.

Centereach Firefighters quickly arrived on Engine 7 and began to attempt to access the inside of the truck. Due to the compacted materials inside the enclosed truck, the rear had to be opened to gain access to hidden fire.

Firefighters encountered smoke and heavy flames and they began the fire suppression.

The fire was completely extinguished within about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported.
