***UPDATE**: Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Mastic last night.
A man was crossing Herkimer Street, at the intersection of Carlton Street, when he was struck by a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe at approximately 8:50 p.m. The driver of the Tahoe, Joseph Virga, 55, of Mastic, stopped the vehicle and called 911. A second vehicle, also travelling southbound on Herkimer Street, then struck the victim and fled the scene.
The victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
Detectives believe the second vehicle that struck the victim is a dark colored, four-door sedan that fled the scene southbound on Mastic Road.

A pedestrian was killed Saturday night. Suffolk County Police Department responded to the reported crash on May 4, 2019 at approximately 8:55p.m. The accident was reported at 1088 Mastic Road. Sources close to the investigation say the unidentified pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Mastic Road. When the first vehicle stopped, a second vehicle went around the stopped vehicle. The second vehicle struck the pedestrian again, subsequently dragging him a few blocks down the roadway. Paramedics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. Major Crash detectives and crime scene units blocked off a four block radius while conducting an accident investigation.
