Propane Tanks Explode as Fire Destroys Long Island Home

Three firefighters injured while battling raging house fire on Jefferson Avenue in West Islip, New York.

On Wednesday June 12, 2019, at approximately 6:00 p.m., West Islip Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 1212 Jefferson Avenue in West Islip. Upon arrival of the first fire department unit, heavy fire and smoke was pushing from the 2nd floor of a two-story single family dwelling. Sources say there were also propane tanks in the rear of the home exploding from the flames.

Assistance was requested from multiple agencies including West Babylon Fire Department, North Babylon Fire Department, Bay Shore Fire Department, Babylon Fire Department and other agencies.

Suffolk County Police confirm three were treated for burn injuries. The injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening. Fire officials say the fire may have started from a BBQ grill near the home.
