A truck burst into flames Thursday morning near a busy shopping center after hitting a natural gas line.

On Thursday, August 29, 2019, at approximately 11:33 a.m., the Hewlett Fire Department was alerted for a reported truck fire at the Peninsula Shopping Center near Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road. When firefighters arrived, they were met with heavy flames and thick black smoke billowing into the clear blue skies. The truck reportedly hit a natural gas line then burst into a fireball. National Grid Gas Company immediately went to work to dig up and shut off the gas main. Mutual Aid was requested from neighboring fire departments due to the active gas leak and fire condition. No injures were reported.
