Child Rape Suspect Killed in Shooting After Pursuit Near Eatonville
Eatonville, WA: At around 2 p.m. today, Pierce County Detectives were scheduled to meet 37 year old Brandon Mark Stoke , originally from Louisiana, regarding a child rape case he was the suspect in.
When the Stokes did not show up for the meeting, South Sound 911 started receiving calls of a man "acting crazy" in a parking lot in the 32600 block of Mountain Highway East armed with a shotgun.
According to witnesses, the Stokes made comments of, “this is my last day on earth, I’m going to make them shoot me," before fleeing northbound on Mountain Highway in a vehicle.
As deputies were patrolling the area searching for the Stokes, they spotted the Stokes’s vehicle near the 35600 block of Mountain Highway East just before 5 p.m. and attempted to stop him.
Stokes took off at speeds close to 80 mph. Deputies gave chase in attempt to bring their suspect into custody.
During the pursuit, the Stokes tried to ram several patrol vehicles and brake check them before he crashed at Eatonville Cutoff Road near Eatonville.
After the crash, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the Stokes and deputies On the scene.
No deputies were injured.
Deputies immediately administered first aid and called for paramedics. Stokes was rushed to Madigan Army Medical Center in Lakewood where he was pronounced deceased.
Tacoma Police stated they responded at around 5:30 p.m. and have taken over the Deputy Involved Shooting investigation, which is standard practice with the passage of I-940.
Tacoma Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released in the coming days.
They provided that five deputies were on the scene at the time of the shooting but it is not clear how many fired their weapon.
Tacoma Police Detectives are still trying to determined if the Stokes was killed by deputies or took his own life during the exchange of gunfire.
Deputies involved will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
