Commercial Garage Explodes into Flames in East Tacoma

The private garage was used to work on commercial vehicles owned and operated by the property owner.

Tacoma, WA: Just before 11:45 p.m., Tacoma Fire received reports of a possible structure fire in the 2200 block of East 67th Street in the outskirts of east Tacoma. While responding, crews advised that they could see heavy smoke in the area and the glow of the fire back in a tree line.

Crews had to drive down the Pipeline Trail that is under construction in order to access the property quickly as it was located in a remote housing complex. When crews arrived, they found a large commercial sized garage fully involved in flames. There were explosions heard and a live power line was sparking at the front of the structure.

Crews initiated a defensive fire attack due to the amount of fire. Shortly into the fire attack the building collapsed. No firefighters were injured in the collapse.

Crews had to lay over one thousand feet of large diameter hose in order to establish a water supply to extinguish this blaze.

It took crews about an hour to get the fire under control with no injuries reported.

A neighbor said that the owner of the property is frequently in that garage working on commercial vehicles.

At this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
