Escape Plans Goes Up in Flames During South Sound Pursuit
Update with statement from Pierce County Sheriff's Department -
At 10:50 p.m. on Saturday February 29, 2020, one of our deputies spotted a black BMW being driven at approximately 65 mph down the center turn lane heading southbound on Park Avenue South in Parkland. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop on the BMW, the driver continued at high speeds and ran through a red light at the intersection with 112th Street South.
The driver continued to accelerate heading through Parkland along C Street as additional deputies attempted to lay stop sticks in the path of the oncoming pursuit.
The BMW sped out of sight of the pursuing deputy, but less than a minute later one of our patrol sergeants spotted the BMW heading eastbound onto Military Road in the Spanaway area. Additional units began to follow the BMW as it turned north onto Waller Road at high speeds. Deputies observed smoke and sparks coming from the BMW as it approached the intersection with Chesney Road.
A rookie deputy leading the pursuit performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) manueuver on the suspect's BMW, causing the vehicle to safely spin to a stop. The driver put his hands in the air and was quickly removed from the vehicle as the large amounts of smoke began to come out from under the hood.
Deputies moved their patrol vehicles away from the BMW and used a fire extinguisher to spray under the hood, but it had no effect and within seconds the BMW became fully engulfed in flames. It appears that the fire was caused by a blown motor and not from the PIT, which had only caused a minor damage on the driver’s side door.
The 39 year old male suspect was booked into the Pierce County Jail for Felony Pursuit/Eluding, Reckless Driving, and Driving While License Suspended/Revoked in the 2nd degree.
Parkland, WA: Just before 11 p.m., deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department were in pursuit on a BMW through the streets of Parkland heading towards Puyallup.
Deputies performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique or PIT maneuver on the vehicle in the 13300 block of Waller Road East to stop the pursuit.
The driver was successfully taken into the custody.
Shortly after the BMW burst into flames.
Crews with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue fought the flames for over 30 minutes as the fuel tank had punctured and they were fighting a fuel driven fire.
No further details were available from the scene other than no injuries were reported.
