Fire Crews Recover Human Remains in Puget Sound Near Steilacoom Ferry Dock

Crews located the remains of a 50s to 60s year old male wearing a life jacket and cold weather gear in Puget Sound

Steilacoom, WA: At around 6:30 p.m. this evening, crews with West Pierce Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a reported water rescue in Puget Sound just off the Steilacoom Ferry Dock located at 1 Union Avenue in the town of Steilacoom.

When crews arrived, they launched their rescue boat Endeavor to the scene to assist in the rescue efforts. When crews reached the scene, they located human remains.

Officials now state the male is in his 50s to 60s and was wearing a life jacket and other cold weather gear.

Earlier in the day the United States Coast Guard was searching for a missing kayaker but they do not know if this male is the one they were looking for. That person was not located during the initial search.

The remains have been turned over to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
