Officer Involved Shooting/SWAT Situation Ends with Suspect in Custody
Houston, TX: A barricaded suspect situation unfolded on Lockwood Drive late Wednesday evening. According to Houston PD Chief Art Acevedo at a night press conference while the situation was unfolding, Houston PD received a call around 10:22 p.m., Dec.18, 2019, of a suspicious African American male with a firearm walking northbound in the 1400 block of Lockwood Drive. At 10:34 p.m., a two-officer unit arrived and observed the suspect. When the officers exited their vehicle, the suspect opened fire on the officers in the 2200 block of Lockwood. The suspect then fled, and barricaded himself in a residence in the 2200 block of Lockwood Drive.
The suspect was struck during gunfire, and SWAT was called to the scene as well as the Hostage Negotiation Team.
"The goal is to get the suspect to surrender without any use of force or anyone getting hurt," Chief Acevedo said during the press conference. The officers involved in the shooting were not injured. Houston Fire was also present on the scene.
Around 12:40 a.m., Thursday, SWAT entered the resident and found the male suspect unresponsive according to Houston PD. Paramedics at the scene confirmed the male became responsive and had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his arm. There was no resistance from the suspect, according to an update from Asst. Chief Pete Lopez. The suspect was transported to a hospital. No name was released.
The suspect is facing Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer. Crime Scene Unit was on the scene investigating.
