California Grandmother Arrested for Bringing Toys to Detained Migrant Children

A California grandmother was arrested Sunday while attempting to deliver toys to a shelter for migrant children

Elizabeth DeCou, 66, a grandmother of four, and Jesse Ingber, 27, were among 35 volunteers who caravanned to the Baptist Child and Family Services shelter on Pennsylvania Avenue Sunday in Fairfield to sing lullabies to kids in Spanish and deliver toys on July 1.

However, Fairfield police officers and a security guard for the shelter blocked their entry into the building and asked them to leave the premises.

Video, which was posted to Facebook on Monday on the Facebook page Solidaridad con los Ninos shows DeCou approaching the shelter holding a basket of toys in her arms to give to the children inside while volunteers sing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" in Spanish.

" Are you going to step back on the sidewalk or no?"

"No," DeCou, a registered nurse and child abuse victim advocate from Oakland, replies.

Officers then take DeCou away in handcuffs as volunteers from the church continue to sing to the children inside.

DeCou said she wanted to ask questions about the well-being of the children inside of the facility but that the officers refused to reveal any information and only replied with asking her to leave.

"We have facilities nearby where children are being held, but we won’t know if they’ve been recently separated from their parents," she told Mercury News.

"We’re not allowed any information as to the status of these children and if they’re safe."

DeCou says the issue is personal to her since her father escaped Nazi Germany at the age of 13 when other family mambers didn't make it out alive.

"I’m so glad he’s not alive today to see this,” she explained.

“I’m so sorry to see what is happening to this country."

The shelter has been identified as one of the facilities used to house migrant children detained after being separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

DeCou spend six hours in jail after being charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

Her next court date is set for July 30.

As a white Canadian (though Canadians are a variety of colours and varying shades right up to the legally married rainbow) I very much doubt in your present state of affairs very few of us would remotely consider living in a political war zone but perhaps a wall does need to be built to keep you in at your cost of course.....looks sideways at my old sounding shoes and checks my field of trees.

ClarkMC, white Canadian groups are flooding across our northern border! Where's your wall?

Race has nothing to do with this, stop trying to force it into this. But the same applies, if white Canadian groups were flooding across our northern border, I would expect and support the same treatment.

So, ClarkMC, may I ask how you tell the law-abiding white people from the murdering, human trafficking and raping white people? I'm just curious.

They didn't just start killing Jews. It came in phases. They destroyed their businesses, homes, etc. They took their riches, and then put them in ghettos, starved them, and took their children away. This one guy, I think he was a doctor but I may be wrong, refused to leave a group of separated children alone on their march to the gas chambers, and when I say to the gas chambers, I mean he went in and got gassed while consoling the children. They may not be heading for gas chambers, but this is wrong. Utterly and completely wrong. History books will remember Trump badly. Real badly.

She was arrested for TRESPASSING, not for bringing toys. If I had a bunch of toys and broke down your front door and camped out in your living room? You kill your own narrative by being stupid with the definitons. Next time try Trespassing Granda with Toys arrested at detention center for...

What atrocities? While I'm normally someone who has no problem making a comparison to known authoritarian governments, "concentration camp" is over the top. No one is being persecuted due to race, belief, or anything other than breaking the law.

They havent let in Congress members. They havent let in our elected officials let alone "people off the street" you people have no more excuses for these atrocities. Laws are what put those people in concentrations camps you idiot. Laws are what allowed slavery you imbecile. An adult uses their brain and understands morality and when a law crosses the line of morality but you would have to have morals to understand that.

This a private facility in charge of children's safety. You cannot just come in. ANYONE comparing this to NAZI GERMANY is a disgrace and insult to people murdered in concentration camps. We have laws and police to enforce these laws. You want to trespass and refuse to leave when asked you will be arrested. You want to act like an adult child and defy the law you will be the reason this becomes a police state. Grow the fk up and start acting like adults.

They can't exactly just let strangers wander in off the street. There's a reason daycare workers and such have to be background checked.

These Cops just don't get it because some of my ancestors were exterminated in WWII. Will Thomas Jefferson's prophecy come true? I don't know but these cops need to be thrown under the bus and then flushed down the toilet for they are a Retard Public Safety Threat!

This administration should hang its head in shame. Have they no shame? At long last have they no shame?
