Atlanta Police Officer Fired for Stealing $500 from Dead Man's Pockets, Cops Say
An Atlanta Police Officer has been fired after she was accused of taking $500 cash from the victim of a fatal shooting on June 19. Richburg was fired on July 8.
On the day of the fatal shooting officers responded to the scene where they found Jamel Harris shot twice in the head. First responders took Harris to the hospital, but he later died. A 43-year-old civilian man was arrested for the homicide.
At some point Richburg allegedly stole $500 cash from the victim's pocket, CBS 46 News reports. An administrative investigation was not able to determine what happened to the cash.
Atlanta police say:
"Officer Richburg did not properly account for the money according to the department's policies and procedures."
Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields terminated the employment of Richburg following the administrative investigation.
Shields released a statement saying:
"Officer integrity goes to the heart of what we do here every single day. It's imperative the public have trust in our word and our actions. It's extremely disappointing to see the victim of a fatal shooting be victimized twice by the actions of one of our officers."
The Fulton County District Attorney's office is expected to prosecute Richburg.
