Cop who Died from Accidental Overdose Stole Fentanyl During Traffic Stop

Ben Keller

A cop in Maine who died from an accidental drug overdose stole fentanyl during a traffic stop just weeks earlier.

Nicholas Meserve, a Lewiston police officer, was found deceased inside of his home February 8 just weeks after he was recorded pocketing fentanyl that had fallen to the ground three weeks prior on January 18.

A medical examiner ruled the 34-year-old died as a result of acute fentanyl intoxication.

According to independent investigators who investigated the cause of his death, the officer was video-recorded pocketing fentanyl from a Lewiston patrol car dash camera during the arrest of a suspect named Jamil Dabson.

Dabson was the passenger of a taxi pulled over by a Maine State Police trooper, who pulled him over because his headlights were off at night.

The trooper then searched Dabson for drugs and found 86 grams of fentanyl bricks in Dabson's possession.

Dabson allegedly attempted to flee the scene, according to News Week.

According to the independent investigators, Meserve is said to have "slipped some of the drug evidence into his pants pocket" as he assisted fellow officers who were picking up fentanyl Dabson had thrown to the ground.

The Lewiston Police Department said it was unaware of Meserve's drug problems, according to Lewiston Police Chief Brian O'Malley.

"All members of the Lewiston Police Department cooperated with the investigation, which disclosed that no officers had any knowledge of Officer Meserve's substance use disorder or his possession of illegal drugs," Chief O'Malley told WGME.

"This is a reminder that the opioid epidemic touches the lives of many in the community regardless of their wealth, race, religion or profession."

Officer Meserve's family honored and paid tribute to him on social media following his death.

"My dad was the best dad in the whole universe," his 9-year-old daughter recalled of her dad left behind by what truly has become an epidemic.

"We were always the best ones at daddy and daughter dances. He taught me a lot of new things about his job," she said.

"He told me what to do if someone attacks me. He made all my dreams come true."

Sadly, officer Meserve's daughter will now have to grow up without a father watching her dreams come true.

And that truly is a tragedy — regardless of his profession.

At least we are still allowed to disagree without ending up in prison.

The cops in Maine are as crooked as a dog's rear leg, I suggest that is a state you avoid.

Oh, NO! Please eliminate "Ow we have Lewiston PD". I will never again be critical of other people's posts.

This is too, too funny. Cop in Tucson, AZ, got canned for drug use, then his partner was canned for knowing about the drugs but didn't report it. But NOBODY in the department new about it. GOOD CHIEF!! Idiot Yuma County, AZ, deputy sheriff serving with a border drug task force murdered a Yuma police officer and state trooper when he was caught stealing drugs from an evidence locker. NOBODY in FOUR law enforcement agencies knew about his drug problem. Mother Nature Ow we have Lewiston PD handled it for us. He died of natural causes while serving LWOP. Now we have Lewiston PD. Out of all those cops NOBODY knew about his drug use!??! Well, good thing they're eliminating themselves so we don't have to put up with IAD, unions and civil service boards.

Some of u folks on here are first class piece of shit! It brings u happiness after reading that? Karma? Yea u remember that one! I even wondered how or why he would pay down a passenger in a ‘cab’. I don’t think that’s legal. So perhaps ‘grabbing’ some pills wasn’t the only thing he did that day but shouldn’t have. But I wouldn’t wish death on a person! Ur a prime ex. of what’s wrong in this country!

I for one am glad that he’s dead he had no business searching the passenger of a car because the driver failed to turn on headlights

I wonder how soon after the traffic stop he forgot about the headlights and started looking for other shit

I personally disagree with that.

I would wish no death on anybody, but it's hard to find sympathy for a person given power and authority who abused his his job and died because of it.

I think it's wrong to wish death on anyone, this just proves police only cause pain, to their own familes and to the families of people they arrest. I don't wish him dead, to bad he didn't live through it so he could have went to jail and got out a better person and could watch his daughter grow up.

C'mon guys.. Be good human beings.

After all, that's all we're asking the cops to do. Hold their fellow officers to account . . . just being good humans.

Exactly, buddy.

We do not want to wish death or harm on any of these guys.

Even the bad ones.

See the principle of no harm in Jainism.. Or "Ahimsa."

The libertarians call it the no-harm principle.

There's a lot to that.

This guy may have been a decent human with a drug problem.. He had a daughter.

Stop and think before you write something hateful.

Billythekiddscat,

I agree with you. Wishing harm or violence is not going to solve anything.

You would almost think it's some cop behind a keyboard baiting you, trying to discredit you.. etc.

Man, sometimes I wonder if anyone is paying attention.

The way these conversations go down is bullshit.

Even good people get caught up in hating, which leads to extremism.

Like the poem "If" says, don't give way to hating..

What are the solutions?

We can realize we disagree and not hate each other. It's OK to disagree, be decent humans, and work at solutions.

Hating, violence, etc. isn't solving problems with humanity. History shows hate only creates more problems.

It doesn't matter if you're a hard core lefty, or far right. Hating doesn't work from either side.

This kind of attitude will scare some of the really good cops away. Then some of the cops who were actually good turned bad because everyone crapped on them.

Truthfully, you can't speculate anything about him other than what the cops are reporting. Because you didn't really know him.

And, as we know, even what the cops are reporting may not be true.

He may have been such a good cop, he got overdosed.

I personally haven't seen the video, but I would like to.

And I surely will not celebrate his death, like some of these clown activist provocateurs.

@Tatoo49 - I agree with you 100%, I hope the mother fucker died screaming and when he died, I hope he was made to crawl upon his belly into the kingdom of darkness.

Ben - You said, "This kind of attitude will scare some of the really good cops away. Then some of the cops who were actually good turned bad because everyone crapped on them", are these the good cops that stand around and watch the bad cops slaughter the civilian population? I'm pretty sure in legal terms that makes them an accomplice or the very least culpable.

some people will comment! Ur right we don’t know him. He could’ve been a good dude. I’m blown away by folks almost celebrating his death! That’s fucked up!

No. All criminals have wives, husbands, children, parents, friends, etc. That does not absolve them from punishment or my wanting to cheer for his demise.

What an insane bunch of bull. Republicans always find the worst possible scenario, push it as though it were true and happening, then hide when proven wrong. Or, they double down. Either way, cops become bad to be part of the brotherhood, not because we, the citizens they are sworn to protect hate them. They, the cops, deserve all the hate and punishments that can be found. Choices. Everybody has choices. Make bad ones and lose.
