Texas Cops Kill Unarmed Man while Shooting at his Friend they say was Armed
A Texas cop shot and killed an unarmed man while trying to shoot another man they said was armed. Police also shot and killed a dog at the residence.
Now prosecutors are saying they will likely charge the surviving suspect with the murder of his unarmed friend, even though his friend was killed by a cop.
It all started when the San Antonio Police Department received a 911 call Wednesday at 1 A.M. requesting police assistance due to an assault that took place at a house.
Police say the person that called 911 told them that they knocked on the door to sell “something” and ended up assaulted by someone in the house.
The house they were dispatched to was a "known drug house", according to Police Chief William McManus.
When the San Antonio police officer Steve Casanova arrived, he immediately requested backup due to the fact that law enforcement has been to the house more than 50 times this year.
Police say once backup arrived, they approached the house and noticed that the door was open and walked inside, which was when the 24-year-old man who was sitting on the couch stood up.
That was when police say they noticed a gun in his waistband, which he was reaching for, prompting them to open fire.
One of the bullets went through the suspect and struck Charles Roundtree in the chest, killing the 18-year-old man.
The 24-year-old man they were trying to kill is recovering at a local hospital and will be charged with several crimes, including possibly felony murder of his friend, according to KENS 5.
His name has not been released.
Daryl Washington, an attorney representing Roundtree's family, said police never identified themselves when they entered the home.
Casanova, a five-year veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative leave for the shooting. He is also being investigated but likely will not face charges.
Police state that a "very large pit bull who was threatening officers in the street" was also shot and killed at the scene, according to KSAT.
Two other people were in the house and were taken to the police station for questioning, but were not charged.
