Rafael Nadal vs Alexander Zverev Head to Head:

This will be the seventh meeting between the two players with Nadal leading the head-to-head 5-1. Zverev’s only win was on the indoor courts last year at the ATP Tour Finals in London.

It has been an interesting switch of surfaces for world number two Rafael Nadal, since winning his 20th Grand Slam a few weeks ago, in what was a delayed end to the clay court season. The indoor swing has always been a challenge for Nadal, evidenced by none other than the fact that he has never won the Masters 1000 titles at Shanghai or Paris and nor has he won the year end ATP Tour Finals.

Not surprisingly, Nadal has not been his clinical self this week, some of it being attributable to the quick change from the Parisian clay and some to the fact that indoors is not his stronghold.

Two of the three matches this week, both against compatriots Feliciano Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta went to deciders after Nadal lost the first set. However, his experience and that too especially in tight situations helped him pull through on all occasions.

It has been an interesting return to tennis for Zverev after the Covid-19 hiatus ranging from a good run at the (US) Open where he lost the final by inches, to back-to-back titles at Cologne, to off court drama in recent weeks in his personal life.

He seems to have managed to separate the on-court and off-court worlds, perhaps well guided by coach David Ferrer as he has had a good run this week. Starting off with a convincing win against Miomir Kecmanovic, the German was pushed by the uncanny Adrian Mannarino in his third round encounter, where the players split two intense tiebreaks before Zverev showed his increasing maturity to win the decider 6-4.

Both players have been in good touch and this promises to be an exciting final. Although Nadal may not be at the levels that he was at Roland Garros last month, one does not undermine him anywhere and most definitely not in the semi-final of a Masters 1000. On the other hand, it has been a good season indoors for the young German.
