It took three days but the Dallas police officer who shot and killed a man inside his apartment after she confused his apartment with her apartment is now in custody on manslaughter charges.
Amber Guyger was booked into the Kaufman County Jail at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday on a $300,000 bond, according to online records.
She is facing between two to 20 years in prison for shooting and killing Botham Jean, a 26-year-old man from St. Lucia in the Caribbean.
The Texas Penal Code describes manslaughter as the “recklessly causes the death of an individual."
It is not clear at this time if they sought out another judge to sign the warrant for manslaughter but she is in custody in Kaufman County instead of neighboring Dallas County where the shooting took place.
The shooting took place Thursday just before 10 p.m. after Guyger had gotten of a 12-hour shift and tried to enter Jean's apartment thinking it was her apartment. But she lived on the floor above Jean.
Police say she had the key in the door when Jean opened it, which was when she shot him twice.
Police say they took blood samples from her to determine if she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol but they did not say how long after the shooting did they wait to obtain those samples.
There had been a rumor going around that Guyger and Jean used to date, but that has been proven false.
