California Cop Shoots Barking Dog but Shrapnel from Bullet Strikes 2 Bystanders
A barking dog startled a cop into pulling out his gun and shooting but missing. However, shrapnel from the bullet struck two bystanders, including the security guard who had called police about a man creating a disturbance as well as the man himself. The dog was also struck by shrapnel.
"You shot me, you shot me in the eye, dude," says the man who is being manhandled by other officers for creating the alleged disturbance.
The dog which appeared to have been recently adopted survived by running into a Safeway grocery store and hiding under somebody's legs.
Sacramento police said the dog bit a cop in the arm which is why he called for backup but that is not apparent in the video released by police. Police also said “an aggressive dog physically charged the officer" but that is debatable.
What is shown in the video is the dog calmly sitting on the sidewalk while a cop lays on top of its owner – hardly a guard dog and much less of a threat. The security guard who called the cops is the man standing over them.
The dog stands up with its tail wagging when two more cops come rushing in to partake in the arrest, still oblivious to its owner's arrest.
It's not until the security guard kicks the dog behind from its hind legs that it turns around and begins barking at him. The dog even charges at him but the guard backs away and the dog backs off before turning towards the cop and barking.
The cop pulls out his gun and fires.
Jandy Jorgensen was shopping in the Safeway when the dog apparently ran in, covered in blood.
“Very scared, shaking like a leaf, she just ran to the back of the store and hid underneath my legs,” Jorgensen said. “She wasn’t aggressive, she was real sweet.”
Jorgensen said the dog was still wearing tags from the Front Street Animal Shelter, possibly indicating that the dog had been recently adopted. more cops come rushing in which
The incident took place Wednesday evening at around 7 p.m. Police have not described exactly what kind of disturbance the man was making.
