VIDEO: Maryland Deputy Shoots and Kills Groundhog Charging Towards him

A Maryland deputy was recorded on video shooting and killing a groundhog after it charged towards him

At first, it appeared as if the Maryland sheriff's deputy was trying to do a good deed by stopping traffic to allow a groundhog to cross the road without getting killed.

But that was before the deputy shot and killed the rodent.

A Carroll County sheriff's spokesman said the deputy had to shoot the animal because it was charging towards him, making him fear for his life.

But a witness video shows the deputy could have easily sidestepped the groundhog.

According to the Baltimore Sun:

The deputy stopped when he observed the groundhog acting oddly, department spokesman Cpl. Jon Light said.

“You see the groundhog coming after the officer. At this point in time, the animal was not acting as a normal animal would. It is within our policy to dispose of any animal that could pose a health threat,” Light said.

The video shows the deputy stepping toward the groundhog, which doesn’t back away. The deputy then slowly backs into the next lane of traffic and the groundhog runs toward the deputy. The deputy then pulls his gun, gets down on one knee and shoots the groundhog once. The groundhog continues to roll around and the deputy then gets down on one knee again and shoots the groundhog a second time, and then walks back toward his patrol car.

“It started out as a cute encounter where I thought he was trying to help the little fella,” said Olkowska, who lives in Pikesville. “I obviously did not think that it would take this turn and was kind of shocked. I am sure the officer did the best thing in this situation. It is not for me to judge.”

The incident took place Sunday afternoon in Eldersburg, about 50 miles north of Washington D.C. The deputy confronted the groundhog because it was in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, according to the Washington Post.

The spokesman said the deputy was trying to coax the animal to the side of the road, which is where it was when the video begins.

But the groundhog got back on the road, then appeared to charge at the cop, which was when the cop fired.

MY goodness you people are so senseless an emotional. Even if the groundhog wasn't rabid, it could have caused an accident. This is a NON issue and you people are turning it into a tragedy. I bet the same people complaining about THIS, are those who could give a shit if a baby is ripped apart in it's mother's womb.

This cop is a total asshole. There was no reason to shoot this animal. I'm just now seeing this 2018 but I will find out if he is still there. The groundhog probably had a litter & was out feeding when dickhead came along.

The article fails to ask the most important question: did the groundhog see its shadow before it died?

What a pansy. If he was so terrified, couldn't he have just resorted to pepper spray? -- and not on the animal, either -- just spray a line across the path, and the marmot won't cross it. And after his second shot he still still leaves the poor critter writhing, instead of approaching closely and administering a coup de grace. Pitiful.

I AGREE WITH YOU, KUDOS FOR YOU POINTING THAT OUT , SOME PEOPLE MAY KNOW ABOUT ANIMAL BEHAVIOR WHILE MANY DONT, CLEARLY THE ANIMAL WAS SCARED, MABE FELT THREATENED AND OR PROVOKED, WHATEVER THR CASE, I FEEL THE OFFICERS NEED A COURSE IN HANDLING WILDLIFE CALLS AS IT IS BAD ENOUGH WE HAVE HUNTER, TRAPPING, POACHING, BUT WITH NUMEROUS GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ALSO TRAPPING AND KILLING WILDLIFE, ITS AMAZING WE HAVE ANY WILDLIFE AT ALL . THE REAL NUISANCE WASNT THE GROUNDHOG BUT THE OFFICER

And this is someone who is to serve and PROTECT? He may need a bit more courage to start protecting people. How was the groundhog supposed to get to the grass with him standing directly in the way? I spoke with a licensed trapper from https://nuisancewildlifemarshals.com/ and they said the groundhog was clearly provoked and put into a situation to defend itself. I truly hope this guy never has to shoot horizontally because he will injure someone.

Of course this is a cowardly Act. Goes without saying.

What enrages me the most is that Deputy Defective starts popping off shots with citizens on either side. A bullets striking a paved road can ricochet anywhere. Even the woman recording this video was within range of a fatal ricochet.

So add reckless endangerment of the public to the list of this guys malfunctions. If you really want to get rid of the groundhog, you have a boot that you can kind of brush him away with. Pretty sure you have a Maglite too. I'd be okay with you whacking a groundhog in the butt or head with a flashlight just too scared away. A little tap will do.

oh please, you can see by the video, the cop WAS trying to do the good deed of helping the poor thing cross the road, but, he had to have been noting the animal was acting strange, no fear of humans, not backing away, acting aggressive, you can see he made the choice to shoot AFTER the animal started to charge at him. I love animals, and I feel bad for it, but, other than the officer just returning to his car and letting it be run over, he had no other choice other than risk getting bit.

The problem is most police are trained to shoot first, ask questions later. Shooting should be their last resort. There are things called martial arts, and tasers and even tranquilizer darts that can stop a threat without killing. Sure, sometimes shooting is the best thing to do. Most of the time, there were other options.

Does anybody know the contact of this police delartment or officer? Any info will help

he was clearly trying to shoo the groundhog away from traffic to keep it from being run over. the girl who is all "oh look, it wants to be petted". no. no it didnt. most wild animals have ZERO desire to have any human contact. groundhogs usually want nothing to do with humans. and sure, even though rabies is rare among groundhogs, it does not mean that this groundhog wasnt rabid. its rare but it DOES happen

This is typical cop behavior. The outrage on this post is funny. Hey the pig thought the Hedgehog was a Black Male. He proceeded to harass and antagonize the hedgehog and then feared for his life and killed it. Hedgehog should have complied instead of charging at the cop? 🙄

To everyone saying he is a terrible person or needs to be fired...allow me to say...WTF?...I love animals too, and its sad to kill anything but you guys need a little perspective...groundhogs are everywhere in Carroll county, they can carry rabies...even if this particular one was not rapid, based on its actions, it would probably have been hit by a car anyway once traffic started up again. Yes its sad, but thats all...it was not cruelty it was not another bad cop abusing his power...it was an officer trying to clear the road for safety reasons, when the critter didn't scurry off like normal groundhogs would do, he did what any farmer or animal control person would have done, and neutralized the possible threat. So please try to find something serious to be upset about like poverty, or actual cases of animal abuse, but I can't take anyone seriously who wants an officer to lose his job over something as trivial as this.

So this animal WAS IN FACT ALREADY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. If Deputy Incompetent, would have just left him there he'd still be fine. And if he was SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE ANIMAL "CHARGING HIM" he should've just let him be instead of coaxing him across the road. The animal probably became spooked when he saw vehicles on both sides of him and tried to get across as fast as he could. And DEPUTY DUMBASS should in fact be put through training to know that the animal was in no way shape or form out to attack the officer. GREAT JOB MARYLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT for allowing this incompetent to carry a weapon and harm a perfectly harmless animal. Someone needs to do the same with HIS ANIMAL and see how the fuck he would feel. Maryland P.D. you are pathetic.

That animal is not rabid! She was not jerky and crazy, she was clearly standing her ground, probably had babies tucked away somewhere nearby. Woodchucks are everywhere and yes, they are in the roadways and they get hit. He didn't have to shoot that poor little animal. Once she was on the side of the road, he should have just gone on his way. What a load of crap, "feared for his life". Where do they find these officers? They are scared of their own shadows.

"The officer feared for his life?" Oh, please, what a coward. What kind of moron antagonizes a wild animal, then shoots it, waits a prolonged period while it writhes in pain, takes a second shot, STILL doesn't kill it and walks away leaving the animal to suffer? This is absolutely horrible and was unnecessary. This cop is incapable of exercising good judgement and needs to be removed from the force. We don't need pansy-ass, scaredy pants, POOR judgement cops running around with guns. The fact that he left this animal suffering is a crime and he needs to be punished. I am livid that anyone would leave an animal to suffer like this.

Another dangerous criminal dead at the hands of a local cop. If the idiot cop had just driven away, the animal would either be alive or dead due to being hit by cars. No matter what, there was no real reason for the cop to get involved. Guess just needed some target practice. Certainly needs it as he missed kill shots from 6 feet.

This is absolute BALONEY!!! Now people on the webpage are trying to claim it was rabid??? Do you realize how many groundhogs I see on a daily basis on my rural mail route? They can be real cheeky buggers when riled, and will often make a stand to chase you away. I once had one chase my truck as I crept away from a cmb site, trying not to run it over as it tried to nip at my tires! I really pissed it off that day! LOL!!! The next week, it was eating veggie crackers from my fingers. :P

cmrosko

It's common to see ground hogs as road kill and NOT due to rabies. Though the article mentions ground hogs with rabies are extremely rare in reality it's almost almost unheard of. Rabies most commonly occurs in carnivors. Sometimes ground hogs just act stupid and that's why we see so many dead in the road. Stopping traffic to try and keep a ground hog from crossing the road is insane. So is killing one execution style in front of a public audience. Maybe the cop should be put out of HIS misery.

"This is the most common diseases that groundhogs carry. Symptoms of a rabid groundhog include the presence of foam in the mouth, full or partial paralysis and also aggression. Rabies is a very dangerous disease to human beings and infected people should seek medical attention within the next few hours after infection. However, it should be noted that it is very rare to come across a rabid groundhog, but once you see one, you should steer clear of it and call animal control services if there are many of them."

In short, the most common disease is very rare.
