WATCH: North Carolina Cops Shoot Man to Death while Complying with their Orders

Police, who tried to keep the video from being released, fear a backlash from the community.

At first, Danquirs Franklin appeared to be ignoring the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers pointing guns at him, ordering to place his gun on the ground.

The gun was not visible as the 27-year-old was squatting next to a Honda parked in the handicapped spot in a Burger King parking lot as the cops repeatedly barked their orders. He was talking to a man in the passenger's seat.

At one point, Franklin reaches into a jacket pocket and pulls the gun out by the barrel and looked to be placing it on the ground when one of the officers opened fire, prompting a second officer to open fire.

"You told me to ...." Franklin says as he collapses. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The incident took place on March 25 after Franklin pulled out a gun on a Burger King employee, prompting at least two calls to police, according to the Charlotte Observer.

When police arrived, they found him squatting by the car where they eventually shot him. The first cop to shot him was Wende Kerl, who claimed to have been in fear for her life.

"Kerl perceived an imminent, deadly threat and subsequently fired her department issued firearm two times," according to a statement released by the city.

Police and prosecutors did not want to release the video but a judge ordered its release after local media filed a petition.

Now city officials fear the video will spark a backlash in the community. At least seven protests have been planned.

“We are prepared for the worst but praying for the the best,” Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Chief Kerr Putney said.

In 2010, the Charlotte Observer wrote an article about his struggles growing up and how he was raised by his grandmother after being born to a crack addict.

Wow. Shot and killed by COPS for "Complying With Police Orders While Black." It appears there is no end to the number of things black citizens can be arrested or killed for doing which are not unlawful.

Look. I hate cops for the most part. But you guys really need to use a little more discernment when posting articles. Dude had a gun and raised the gun after he was told to drop it. THAT is why he was shot.

All cops fear for their lives from the minute they open their eyes every morning. The are chicken-shit bullies that hate the public (especially non-white) and jump on any and every excuse to shoot and kill people. Just another day of a cop doing what he/she loves knowing that there will be little if any repercussions. Fuck The Police. They are the problem, not the solution. More people are harmed and killed by cops than helped.

More whites are killed by police. If you don't like cops you are free top leave the country.

Thank you for your ignorant response. I moved out of the USA 5 years ago and have not regretted it once. I still love my country but hate the horrors that are committed in the name of justice, law and order, and Trump. Not the America I came from. Besides, I gave the cops the credit they deserve for killing innocent whites also. Thank you.

When do citizens get the same rights to 'Stand your Ground' against cops? Cops are automatically given the get out of trouble free card and we are not allowed to defend ourselves. Right or Wrong, that is part of why cops are ambushed.

If only "Summary Execution" were LEGAL punishment for these two "Badge Bully" cops.

This story contains a link that says “Charlotte Observer” but actually leads to a story from the News & Observer, which is the Raleigh, NC paper, not Charlotte.

He should have been shot by the burger flipper.

  1. The deceased was a fool. Unless the burger flipper threatened him with unlawful deadly force, there was NO more justification for pulling a gun than there was for North Miami cop Jonathan Aledda to shoot Charles Kinsey. If he hadn't done that, he almost certainly would still be alive.

  2. Whenever cops try to suppress video, it's INVARIABLY to conceal wrongdoing.

So much for "due process" and "a fair trial".

While I see what you are saying, His life should have been safe from the cops and should matter as well. The employee was safe long before the police showed up. You, nor I, know the full story as to why he pulled the gun on the employee. We aren't here saying that this guy was right to threaten that employee, we're here discussing the shooting of a man by police for complying with police demands. He did what he was told and they shot him anyway. That doesn't concern you? It sure concerns me and I live in another world where this isn't nearly as common. At the point of the first shot, the only ones in danger were the victim and the passenger in the car, both from police bullets. Why do you think the police didn't want to release the video? Because it implicates them in an unjustified shooting. The cop rightfully got scared, as they should in every weapons related call. That's not an issue, the issue is how she reacted to him reacting properly to their demands. So if you get pulled over in North Carolina for a broken tail light and you have a concealed carry license, you have a pretty good chance of being shot by an over reacting cop and if that doesn't scare you, you're an idiot.

Fact number one : He pulled a gun on a Burger King employee. He asked for whatever happened from that point on. The Burger King employee's life is safe from him, that is what matters.
