Colorado Cops Mistakenly Kill Homeowner During Home Invasion

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz

Police killed a innocent man who was protecting his family from an armed intruder.

Police in Aurora, Colorado shot a homeowner that was defending his own home against an armed intruder.

An armed resident and an intruder were killed after a home invasion and officer-involved shooting on Monday morning.

In and around 1am on Monday an armed intruder performed a home invasion on a innocent man and his family on 10609 E. Montview Blvd. The intruder shot a juvenile in the home and caused serious injuries. The adult homeowner then shot and killed the intruder.

But the Aurora Police Department ended up shooting the innocent man reports KMBC News. The police arrived on scene shortly after the first shots were fired from inside the home where they then encountered the armed homeowner.

Confused as to what was happening, police shot the armed homeowner. The homeowner was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds where he later died.

When police went deeper inside the home, they found the intruder shot dead on the bathroom floor. Police confirmed the intruder was fatally shot by the armed homeowner.

While in the home, authorities also found the juvenile that had been shot, who was taken to the hospital for serious non life threatening injuries.

The identities of the victims will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office. No officers were shot in the incident.

Expecting a wrongful death lawsuit from the homeowners family, Aurora police Chief Nick Metz says:

"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved. We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very difficult time."

The officer that fired the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave.

When did the police officer exactly feel his life was in danger? I seem to have missed that in the report...

Once again, mere possession of a gun is not a crime, and certainly not an act authorizing deadly force. Especially inside a man’s own home. Hopefully this officer will be prosecuted for murder. This was first class dereliction of duty and multiple civil rights violations.

We don't have to protect you and we'll kill you if you try to protect yourself.

Once again we hear about trigger happy cops doing what they do best. Shoot and kill/murder innocent victims first... then go on paid vacation for doing the dastardly deed. Rail Car Fan

The homeowner shot by police was a 79-year old Vietnam Vet and retired accountant. A neighbour on other news source says she heard, "Drop the gun, drop the gun! And then three or four shots" - presumably when the homeowner emerged from his house to meet the arriving police.
