The rapid world championship and Blitz 2024, bringing together among the best chess players in the world, began on Thursday, December 26 and will end on Tuesday 31, but we already know that the favorite and double champion of the last two editions, the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, will not renew his title this year.
It was not a missed blow that left the Grand Master International competition, world number one in the Elo ranking, but a non-compliance with the dress code. In question: the jeans carried by the player in the decor of the Cipriani Wall Street, in New York, where the tournaments take place this year, on the occasion of the centenary of the International Federation of Chess (Fide).
Lady and Jean
Carlsen was first sentenced to a fine of 200 dollars by the Fide, shortly before Round 8, who opposed it to Aryan Tari, the Norwegian number two. At the end of the game, he was informed by the referee that he could not play the ninth round if he did not change immediately.
However, the fide policy in terms of clothing code explicitly mentions that jeans are authorized for players, captains and delegation leaders: only performers are prohibited, which was not the case for that carried by Carlsen.
“I said that I will change tomorrow, but they said it was necessary to change me now and it became a question of principle for me. Honestly, I’m too old now to worry about it that much “Carlsen said in an interview with Take Take, just after leaving the tournament.

At the time of his disqualification, Carlsen had scored 5/8 and was at a point and a half of the leaders of the championship, with little chance of keeping his title. The Norwegian, who had already had trouble with the Fide, especially on the pressures exerted by the Federation on the players so that they do not participate in freestyle tournaments, decided to leave the competition without calling, declaring in flowery language no longer to want to have to do with the FIDE.
“The event in New York was very expensive, I know it from experience. It was also an opportunity, but what remains now to the organizers is a kind of meaning devoid of meaning, an incredible advertisement for Magnus Carlsen with “Fuck You Fide” as slogan “reacted to Twitter Ilya Merenzon, the director of the company World Chess.
